Cleaning Your Cooler After A Hunt

  • 3 min read

Proper maintenance and cleaning of your hunting cooler ensures its longevity, optimal performance, and hygienic storage of game meat on your next hunt. It's task number one after dropping your animal off at the processor or completing the game processing yourself. Let's explore the best practices for keeping your cooler clean and in top condition.

After each hunting trip, a thorough cleaning is essential.  This process maintains hygiene and prevents odors that could attract wildlife on future hunts or potentially contaminate your next trophy.

Here are the steps we recommend:

Empty and Rinse: Remove all contents and ice. Rinse the interior thoroughly with clean water to remove any loose debris.

Soap Wash:Use mild, unscented dish soap and warm water. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners that could damage the cooler's interior. A mixture of water and baking soda can be effective for stubborn stains or odors.

Scrub Gently: Use a soft sponge or cloth to clean all surfaces, including the lid, gasket, and any crevices where bacteria could hide. Pay special attention to corners and the area around the drain plug.

Sanitize: An extra sanitizing step is crucial for coolers used to store raw game meat. Use a solution of 1 tablespoon of bleach per quart of water. Wipe down all interior surfaces with this solution and let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Alternatively, you can sanitize your hunting cooler with our Cooler D-Funk, which is less harsh than bleach.

Dry Completely: Leave the cooler open to air dry after cleaning. This prevents mold and mildew growth.

Clean Exterior: Remember the outside. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth to remove dirt and grime. For tough stains, use a mild soap solution.

The drain plug is often overlooked but also needs maintenance. A leaky drain plug could let the heat in the ice chest, or worse, it could leak bloody water to whatever it's sitting on. Remove and clean the drain plug separately to maintain your drain, ensuring the threads are debris-free. Check the gasket around the drain plug for wear and replace if necessary. A light coating of food-grade silicone grease on the threads can help maintain a good seal.

Lingering odors can be problematic, especially with game meat. After cleaning, leave an open box of baking soda in the cooler for a day or two to absorb odors. Alternatively, leaving crumpled newspapers in a clean, dry cooler can help absorb odors. A mixture of water and white vinegar (1:1 ratio) can be effective for persistent smells. Wipe down the interior, let it sit for a few hours, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Let it sit with the lid open for a day or two before storing it until your next hunt.

Also, consider using our Cooler D-Funk to clean and deodorize your hunting cooler.

Keep your hunting cooler in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight to limit UV damage, excessive heat, and warping. Leave the lid slightly open to allow air circulation and prevent mold growth.  Don't store heavy items on the cooler, which can damage the lid or compress the gasket.

Following these maintenance and cleaning tips ensures your ultimate hunting cooler is ready for your next hunt.
