Canyon Cooler hard coolers are made using a process called rotomolding. Once the bodies are made, they are pressure filled with a high density foam. This is where their weight comes from and also what allows them to retain ice longer! While rotomolded coolers are naturally great at keeping their cool, there are still a number of factors which can dramatically affect their ice retention.
Below are some tips to keep the cold as long as possible:
- Pre-chill your cooler. This one is our most important and effective tip. Before loading up, add a sacrificial bag of ice or cold packs for a few hours (or overnight). This cools the thick walls so your “real” ice doesn’t get wasted lowering the internal temp.
- Start With Cold Contents. Warm drinks and food melt ice fast. Pre-chill everything in a fridge or freezer before packing it into the cooler.
- Use Block Ice (or Make Your Own). Block ice melts much slower than cubes. Mix block ice with cubes for fast cooling and long-lasting cold.
- Fill Your Cooler Fully. Less air = less melting. Fill empty space with ice, frozen water bottles, or cold packs. A full cooler holds cold better than a half-empty one.
- Keep It in the Shade.Direct sun heats the cooler walls. Even partial shade can dramatically extend ice life.
- Limit Lid Openings.Every time you open the lid, cold air escapes. Grab what you need quickly and close it tight.
- Seal It Properly. Make sure latches are fully closed and the gasket is clean. A tight seal keeps warm air out.
- Use Frozen Water Bottles. They act as block ice and turn into cold drinking water when they melt. That's a win-win.
- Layer Smart.Cold sinks, so this keeps everything evenly chilled. Keep block ice or frozen bottles on the bottom, fill the middle with food and drinks, and cover the top with loose ice or cubes.
